Custom Bass Rods
The sport of fishing especially competitive fishing has become quite high tech and specialized. Most of you have spent thousands of dollars for bigger and faster bass boats with all of the latest electronics. You invest hundreds in new reels, pay big bucks for braided line and try out all of the new monos and fluorocarbons. You will think nothing of spending $15.00 to $25.00 for a new crank bait and heaven only knows how much for some of the swim baits.
More than any other piece of fishing equipment the rod is in my opinion the most important. It is an extension of the fisherman’s hand and it will allow him the opportunity to complete his mission, hopefully with success. With it he can make a cast to the chosen water, work his lure to entice the fish to bite. Then with the rod set the hook, play and land the fish. With a little logic the better the rod is matched to the angler, the water and the type of fishing he is doing the greater his chances of success.
When you purchase a factory or a production type fishing rod, you are buying a rod that is built to fit all fisherman and all reels. Rod manufactures use a lower grade of components and reduce the number of guides on each rod, thus keeping the cost down. Most rod manufactures pay little to no attention to the spine in the blank and the placing of the guides on properly.
When you decide on a custom fishing rod it will be designed and built for you. It will fit your physical dimensions and be suited to the particular type of fishing that you wish to do. Picking the right blank with the action you like and the length that would be comfortable for you is the first step. The reel seat and the grips are custom fit to you. The two most important things about a reel seat are that the reel fits correctly and that the reel seat is assembled to the blank properly.
Choices of the guides are limitless. The number of guides and the placement of these guides are one of the most important steps in designing a custom rod. With the correct number of guides and the proper spacing on the blank it will improve the sensitivity, casting distance, casting accuracy and give greater hook setting power to the rod.
Last but not least are the cosmetics of the rod, not of the greatest of importance. However this will separate it from all other rods. There are many different options to be considered here. Different colors such as your favorite team or to the color of your boat. I personally wrap my own rods in different colors to different categories, reaction type rods, jig rods, worm rods and drop shot rods. This helps in looking for a specific rod when I open the rod locker it makes it a little easier to find what I'm looking for.
